Freshwater down, Fly fishing up!

According to the Outdoor Recreation Participation Topline Report 2013, Freshwater fishing  decreased by 1% last year (2012-2013).  A three year average decline of 1.5%.  Saltwater fishing has also declined by an average of 0.8% over the past three years.

Where are these fisherman going?

On the upside, the magical sport of fly fishing has increased 2.6% on average over the past three year! That’s 500,000 more people fly fishing since 2010. This is a refreshing trend especially since reporting back in 2009 showed concerns about the sport.   Maybe the fisherman started spreading the word about their secret fishing hole!

Or, maybe the newest trend of kayaking, called stand up paddling (SUP), mixed with the old tradition of fly fishing is the key to increasing the sport.  Stand up paddling and fly fishing?  No joke!  They’re doing it in Montana.  Check it out:   Stand up paddling and fly fishing.
